Retinal without the peeling week.

Most people who quit retinoids quit in week two, during the flaking. The ingredient works; the introduction is what fails. This is buffered enough to skip that phase without being diluted to the point of doing nothing.

How it feels

A light serum with a slight cushion. Mild warmth on the first few uses is normal; visible flaking should not be.

Key ingredients

  • Retinal

    Retinal

Converts to retinoic acid in fewer steps than retinol, so it works faster - the reason it is worth the more careful introduction.

  • Panthenol

    Panthenol

Provitamin B5, the buffering half of the formula and the reason the peeling phase is largely avoided.

  • Ceramides

    Ceramides

Barrier lipids that offset the dryness every retinoid causes, included so the two work together rather than against each other.

About the product

Celimax's Vita A Retinal Shot Serum is aimed at the moment most retinoid routines fail.

It is rarely the ingredient. Retinoids have the best evidence base in skincare for fine lines and texture. What fails is week two - the flaking, tightness and redness of the adjustment period, which is when most people decide retinoids do not suit them and stop.

Retinal converts to retinoic acid in fewer steps than retinol, so it works faster and, conventionally, irritates more. This formula buffers it with panthenol and ceramides, which is the difference between an introduction people get through and one they abandon - without diluting the active to the point of pointlessness.

Use at night only, starting two evenings a week and building up over a month. Apply to dry skin after cleansing, before moisturiser. A moisturiser on top from the beginning helps more than people expect.

Sunscreen the following morning is not optional. Retinoids increase sun sensitivity, and using one without daily SPF undoes the work.

Why we stock it

Retinal is a step up from retinol and usually comes with a peeling phase that makes people quit. Buffering it enough for a first-time user, without diluting it to pointlessness, is a difficult balance and this gets it right.

Care
If you are new to retinol, apply every other night for the first two weeks. Start with a small amount on targeted areas and reduce the amount or frequency if irritation occurs. Once your skin becomes accustomed to retinol, it may be used every evening. Apply sunscreen the following morning.

Frequently asked questions

Is retinal stronger than retinol?

Yes - it converts to retinoic acid in fewer steps, so it works faster and conventionally irritates more. The buffering here is what makes it approachable for a first retinoid.

How do I start?

Two nights a week for a fortnight, then three, building over a month. Apply moisturiser on top from the start rather than waiting until your skin complains.

Should I expect peeling?

Mild warmth on the first few uses is normal. Visible flaking means you are going too fast - drop back a step and rebuild more slowly.

Can I use it with acids or vitamin C?

Not on the same night while adjusting. Alternate evenings, and add vitamin C to your morning routine instead.

Is it safe during pregnancy?

No. Retinoids are not recommended in pregnancy or while breastfeeding - bakuchiol is the usual alternative.
