Hyaluronic acid is not one thing. The molecules come in different sizes, and size determines how far into the skin they can travel - a large molecule sits on the surface and holds water there, a small one reaches into the upper layers. A serum using a single weight therefore hydrates at a single depth, which is why so many hyaluronic serums feel briefly plumping and then nothing.
This uses five molecular weights, so water is bound at several depths at once. The low-molecular fraction is the part that matters most and the part cheaper formulas leave out.
Panthenol supports the barrier, which is the necessary partner - in a dry, air-conditioned climate a humectant with nothing to seal it will pull water out of the skin rather than into it.
Apply to damp skin after cleansing, before moisturiser. Applying to dry skin in low humidity is the most common mistake with any hyaluronic serum.

Why does hyaluronic acid sometimes make skin drier?
Because a humectant pulls water from wherever it can find it. Applied to dry skin in a dry environment with nothing sealing it, it draws moisture out of your skin. Apply to damp skin and always follow with a moisturiser.
Do the five weights actually matter?
Yes. Molecule size determines depth. A single-weight serum hydrates at one level; multiple weights bind water at several, which is why this feels more substantial than the percentage suggests.
Do I still need a moisturiser?
Yes - this is a humectant serum, not a moisturiser. It needs something over it to hold the water in, especially in air-conditioning.
Can I use it with actives?
Yes, and it is a good partner for them. Apply this first on damp skin, then your active, then moisturiser.
